Glen Ellyn Guide

Located in DuPage County, the village of Glen Ellyn is a quiet community with almost no industry. Just 23 miles west of Chicago, the city is home to 26,999 residents. The historic Central Business District is a convenient shopping area offering shops and restaurants. Chicago is easily accessible by bus, train or car; and Midway and O’Hare Airports are just 45 minutes away.

The village has two golf courses, and 25 parks offer recreation centers, playgrounds, ball fields, and picnic areas. The boathouse at Glen Ellyn Lake is used for public and private events, and the lake is the site of the annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta. Other annual community events include the Pet Parade, Taste of Glen Ellyn and Festival of the Arts.

The nearby College of DuPage Arts Center is a popular entertainment venue that features national and local performers. Public and private schools are well-regarded, and student performance is consistently above average.

History

Glen Ellyn was first settled in the 1830s by pioneers seeking land that they could call their own. The Glen Ellyn Historical Society preserves the city’s past at Stacy’s Tavern, which was built in 1846 as a stagecoach inn. The tavern now hosts a museum filled with local artifacts and exhibits. Plaques identify other buildings of historical interest throughout the village.

Glen Ellyn has single-family detached homes, condominiums, and townhouses in a variety of styles and prices. Single-family homes are available in ranch, split-level and contemporary styles. Most homes are located on large lots with mature trees. Homes in Glen Ellyn Countryside start in the mid-$200,000s, while Glen Park Estates and Lake Ellyn homes are priced at $500,000 and more. Prices for estate properties start at $1 million, and many of these homes feature substantial acreage. Condominiums and townhouses are priced from the low $100,000s to the $400,000s. Prices can exceed $600,000 for new properties featuring luxurious amenities. Land and lots are also available for custom building.

Recreation

Glen Ellyn offers several recreational opportunities. Golfers can ply their skills on the Village Links, which has both nine- and 18-hole courses, or at the Glen Oaks Country Club. The Glen Ellyn Park District has a network of facilities with more than 400 recreational programs. Soccer, softball, speed skating, football and baseball teams are also available to those interested in improving their athletic performance.
